Sometimes, there’s an urge to comment on the world around us. \u00a0I\u2019ll say it up front, my goal is never to offend. \u00a0I understand that people have different sensitivities, and no matter where I land on the opinion spectrum, someone will always find something to disagree with. \u00a0That said, I\u2019m well aware of the conversational third rails: sex, politics, and religion. \u00a0Which technically leaves me with the weather. \u00a0And while I\u2019ll certainly talk about the weather when it matters, I won\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

Yes, I\u2019ll touch on other topics, sometimes the ones we \u201cshouldn\u2019t\u201d talk about. \u00a0I won\u2019t pick sides. \u00a0I won\u2019t preach. \u00a0But I will observe, reflect and occasionally be a bit irreverent. \u00a0Hopefully, I\u2019ll also make it a little fun along the way.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, CNN ran a story on laughter<\/a>. \u00a0According to them, children laugh around 400 times a day. \u00a0Adults? \u00a0Just 15. \u00a0Laughter, it turns out, is good for our health. \u00a0It reduces stress by lowering cortisol and boosts our mood through increased serotonin. \u00a0Basically, it works like a natural antidepressant. \u00a0It sounds great in theory, but life gets busy and those simple joys slip away from us.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m no comedian and I won\u2019t pretend to be one.\u00a0 I won\u2019t focus on humor here.\u00a0 I know exactly one clown joke and maybe I\u2019ll share it one day, if the topic ever comes up. \u00a0Humor isn\u2019t the focus of this blog, but you\u2019ll still find it here. \u00a0I can\u2019t help that.<\/p>\n

What I truly enjoy is observing the world. \u00a0Sometimes, things happen that are so strange or unexpected, they just stick with you, demanding to be shared. \u00a0Those are the moments I\u2019ll write about most often. \u00a0My intention isn\u2019t to criticize, but to explore, to question and to understand. \u00a0As a scientist, observation is one of my strongest tools. \u00a0Understanding? \u00a0That part takes work. \u00a0Sometimes, it never comes.<\/p>\n

If this blog has a purpose, it\u2019s to help me think through writing. \u00a0Not about science necessarily, but about life. \u00a0Because more than anything else, I am a student of life.<\/p>\n
