{"id":909,"date":"2026-06-16T05:33:51","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T11:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/?p=909"},"modified":"2026-06-14T09:45:35","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T15:45:35","slug":"100-things-ive-learned-from-writing-100-tales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/06\/16\/100-things-ive-learned-from-writing-100-tales\/","title":{"rendered":"100 Things I\u2019ve Learned from Writing 100 Tales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fourteen months ago, I started a blog called <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/\"><em>Tales of Many Things<\/em><\/a> because I have never been particularly good at focusing on one project at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Normal bloggers pick a lane.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Travel.<br \/>\nHistory.<br \/>\nScience.<br \/>\nPolitics.<br \/>\nFood.<br \/>\nTechnology.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at that sensible approach and thought, \u201cWhat if I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/search-and-rescue\/\">search and rescue<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/01\/the-trouble-with-the-oxford-comma-and-other-style-wars-we-pretend-matter\/\">Oxford comma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/quantum-mechanics\/\">quantum mechanics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/05\/25\/how-we-forgot-the-true-meaning-of-decoration-day-and-found-a-great-deal-on-mattresses\/\">Memorial Day<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/humor\/\">odd human behavior<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/family\/\">family history<\/a> and whatever strange fact annoyed me over breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seemed like a perfectly reasonable lack of editorial discipline.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred articles later, I\u2019ve discovered something unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>There aren\u2019t many things.<\/p>\n<p>There are only a handful of stories that human beings keep telling themselves while wearing different costumes.<\/p>\n<p>I thought today would be a good occasion to write about the \u201c100 Things I\u2019ve Learned from Writing 100 Tales\u201d. What on Earth have I learned after spending 100 articles wandering through the strange corners of existence?<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered that I\u2019m the kind of person who writes entire articles because an <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/07\/when-intent-goes-astray\/\">amusement park sign looked funny<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/smartphone\/\">phone manufacturers overpromise and underdeliver<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s the abridged version. After bouncing from <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/search-and-rescue\/\">search and rescue missions<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/history\/\">ancient history<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/corporate-culture\/\">corporate absurdities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/06\/the-odd-tale-of-tim-n-buck\/\">punk rock lyrics<\/a>, I sat down to count the pieces of wisdom I\u2019ve picked up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-910\" src=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-16-1-panic-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"691\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-16-1-panic-2.jpg 691w, https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-16-1-panic-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not literally one hundred things. Maybe a dozen and a half. Things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;ve learned that people are <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/02\/13\/superstition-statistics-and-our-unshakable-love-of-spooky-math\/\">more interesting than they realize<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/29\/the-new-power-suit\/\">less interesting than they think they are<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>History is under absolutely <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/11\/27\/the-waddle-and-the-wattle-a-turkeys-eye-view-of-america\/\">no obligation to make sense<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Nature always <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/19\/take-the-extra-minute-frostbite-is-still-a-real-winter-threat\/\">gets the last word<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Every family has at least one relative who, given the right circumstances, could accidentally <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/05\/04\/may-the-culture-be-with-you-the-cultural-significance-of-star-wars\/\">start a cult<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The shortest path between two ideas is usually an unnecessary, but <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/05\/04\/take-the-extra-minute-an-imperial-safety-briefing-for-the-tk-trooper\/\">entertaining tangent<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Search and rescue teaches that <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/12\/02\/why-i-serve-reflections-on-a-life-in-search-and-rescue\/\">preparation is a form of kindness<\/a>. The map you packed might save someone else\u2019s day, not just your own.<\/li>\n<li>Technology <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/05\/08\/the-airlock-bank-when-security-becomes-the-customer-experience\/\">solves problems<\/a> and immediately invents <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/06\/02\/a-civilization-poisoned-by-progress-from-lead-pipes-to-microplastics\/\">newer, fancier problems<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/09\/12\/the-space-between-us\/\">Politics change<\/a>. Human nature mostly updates its wardrobe.<\/li>\n<li>Every expert was once the person asking <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/09\/28\/the-undiscovered-country-of-stupid-questions-a-guilty-confession\/\">embarrassingly basic questions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/11\/23\/we-are-probably-not-alone-but-3i-atlas-isnt-our-ride\/\">universe is far stranger<\/a> than any conspiracy theory. The <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/05\/29\/these-arent-the-aliens-youre-looking-for\/\">conspiracy theorists simply lack imagination<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2025\/12\/31\/reckless-predictions-for-2026\/\">humor is survival equipment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/poetry\/\">Poetry is beautiful<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And marmots absolutely <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/2026\/02\/02\/the-great-rodent-referendum-a-proud-tradition-of-meteorology-by-rodent\/\">know more than they&#8217;re telling us<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The funny thing is that these ideas keep showing up no matter what I write about. When I look back across all those seemingly unrelated posts, I stop seeing the individual topics and start seeing the recurring themes connecting them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A story about science becomes a <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/science\/\">story about curiosity<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A story about history becomes a <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/history\/\">story about memory<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A story about search and rescue becomes a <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/search-and-rescue\/\">story about responsibility<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A story about language becomes a <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/language\/\">story about how difficult<\/a> it is for one human being to explain anything to another.<\/li>\n<li>A story about artificial intelligence somehow becomes a <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\">story about what makes people unique<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Even the <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/holidays\/\">holiday articles<\/a> usually end up asking why we remember some things and forget others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-911\" src=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-16-2-marmots-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-16-2-marmots-2.jpg 630w, https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-16-2-marmots-2-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn\u2019t changing subjects nearly as often as I thought I was.<\/p>\n<p>The topics change. The questions don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ve discovered that <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/?s=curiosity\">curiosity beats certainty<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/search-and-rescue\/\">Preparation beats panic<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/obituary\/\">Kindness matters<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/tag\/history\/\">History rhymes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/?s=progress\">Progress always sends a bill<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>People are simultaneously <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/culture\/\">ridiculous and magnificent<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The universe is <a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/?s=universe\">vast, indifferent and occasionally hilarious<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The best conversations start with the words, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/talesofmanythings.com\/blog\/category\/science\/\">I wonder&#8230;<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve also discovered that writing a hundred articles doesn\u2019t make anyone wise. It mostly gives you a larger collection of odd facts and a growing inability to let perfectly good rabbit holes go unexplored.<\/p>\n<p>After a hundred tales, I\u2019ve come to suspect that this blog was never really about science, history, language, search and rescue, holidays, politics, technology or the strange corners of human civilization.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been about the same thing all along. It\u2019s been about what it means to be human in a strange and wonderful universe.
